Mark Gilvey Creative…

Professional commercial photography—because it’s really an investment in your business, not in just pictures.

Commercial photography is all about creating images to help sell a product or service. I have been designing and working for and with art directors to make businesses goals come to fruition since 1985. My work has appeared in fliers, on posters, on television, in videos, multi-screen video/slide show presentations, on the covers of magazines like Prince William Living, Washington Business Forward, Electrical Contractor, SPIRIT magazine, Advanced Photoshop, Penn Lines, Science News, in the White House, on board a Military vessel (the USS Iwo Jima LH7,) and in the National Museum of the Marine Corps for an architectural firm based in Denver, Colorado.

Using my skills as a graphic designer has helped me to see images in a way that is more conducive to selling a product or service and not just a pretty picture. To me, photography can be so much more than what I see in the viewfinder.

It starts with a creative concept before the shutter is ever clicked. Then, an orchestra of events can take place during the shoot, but it doesn’t stop there. Images may need to be combined with other elements like other photos, graphics, 3D illustration, text, and audio. After that, they must be optimized for the specific media on which they will be viewed. There’s more than just a click involved and I am here to help you put together something great!

I don’t just serve businesses in need of this service; I can partner with design firms working on photography for advertising campaigns, that may need retouching and photo illustrations.

That’s my business side. Continue below to learn about my personal work.

Personal Work

When I’m not shooting commercial work, I still photograph. I enjoy landscape and the street photography genres. I especially like the street photography genre because it’s the most pure of all genres. It brings me back to the meaning of just having a camera and capturing something with impact. However…many people do very little work on “street” images beyond just capturing them. This is where I break away from the pack.

I can’t just leave an image as it comes off the camera. For me, the actual art of photography only begins with a click of the shutter and then you have to take it through to completion. Your choices on what you make prominent in an image, where you want the ey to go while reviewing the entire image, these aspects can only be controlled after the moment has been captured. It’s not complete without a well thought-out post production.

If you would like to follow my street photography, I upload regularly to Instagram. Click an image to view enlargement and additional images—some are quite humorous.

My Fine Art Photography

My fine art photography also includes painted photographs like the image you see in the background here of two people riding their bicycles toward the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. I enjoy taking my images and making them appear to be painted. I do this as part of my other business; Mark Gilvey Fine Art Photography.

What if you found a image that looked perfect for your living room (or office) but because of the wall color or the color of the furniture, the image would be too powerful? What if you could have that image in a different palette that would help support that space rather than compete with it—that is what I do! I make images in several different palettes to address this very issue. See my website for all of the current versions or follow my mgfineartphoto instagram account to see new images as they are offered.

I offer commercial licensing as well, please contact me for usage. I can also create custom images for a specific use in case you wanted an image you already have converted into one of these or a composite.
